Privacy
What to Gift is also a research project that studies automated traffic: crawlers, AI assistants and bots. Each request to this site is logged.
What we keep
- Connection details: your IP address, for the time given below, and a keyed pseudonym of it that never changes and is used to count visits.
- Request details: time, page, status, referrer, user agent, and the way your software connects (connection and header fingerprints). These describe software, not who you are.
- Cookies: we record the names of cookies your browser sends to this site, never their values. We set no cookies.
- Reference codes: each page shows a short code derived from a keyed pseudonym of your connection. It is kept with your visit records and deleted with them.
How long
- Visits that look like a person: IP address removed after 1 day.
- Automated traffic from home-type networks, and visits we cannot yet classify: IP address removed after 30 days.
- Automated traffic from datacentres, and verified crawlers: IP address kept for the full retention period.
- Request records of every kind are deleted after 90 days. Identifiers of visits that look like a person are deleted at the same point.
If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, we do not build a profile of your visits, and your IP address is removed after 1 day.
Why, and who gets it
We use these records to study automated traffic, detect impersonation of known crawlers, and publish aggregate statistics. We do not sell or share personal information. Published statistics never identify individual visitors.
